Reach Out and Read of Greater New York to Honor Jack Pace, Partner, White & Case LLP

September 19, 2022, New York, NY — Reach Out and Read of Greater New York (ROR GNY) will celebrate serving New York’s youngest readers on October 3, 2022 at Tribeca Rooftop. Jack Pace, Partner at White & Case LLP, Chair of Reach Out and Read of Greater New York, and long-standing early literacy champion will be honored for his years of dedication to the organization.

Reach Out and Read of Greater New York gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. Building on the unique relationship between families and medical providers, ROR GNY gives parents and guardians the tools they need to develop their children’s early literacy skills.

The evening will recognize the collaborative effort of the ROR GNY community and honor Board Chair, Jack Pace’s outstanding commitment to early literacy. As a core member of White & Case’s leading global antitrust litigation practice, Pace has been recognized as a leading antitrust lawyer by several publications. He is ranked by Legal 500 in the Cartel and Antitrust Civil Litigation/Class Action categories and is a two-time “MVP” in Law360, winning the award in the Life Sciences category 2015 and in the Competition category in 2011. Additionally, he has done extensive work on behalf of the firm’s pro bono clients. His work as Chair of the Board of ROR GNY has impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of children in Greater New York.

“Jack’s leadership and commitment to Reach Out and Read of Greater New York is unmatched,” says Emily Marchese, ROR GNY Executive Director. “His dedication over the last 18 years has helped us put over 300,000 books in the hands of the families we serve over his tenure with the organization – many of which were the first books in the children’s home libraries.”

“When I became a parent, the joyful memories of my parents reading to me as a child almost instinctually led me to start reading to my girls every night,” says Pace. “Helping to make those memories possible for the next generation of New York children drives us in this work. I love knowing that our efforts aid in showing these families that reading is something they can do with their children that is fun, positive, and will have an unforgettable generational impact across lifetimes.”

Additionally, ROR GNY will bestow the 2022 Mills Tannenbaum Children’s Literacy Award to children’s book author and illustrator, Aram Kim. Medical professionals from Urban Health Plan, Bellevue Hospital, Morris Heights Health Center, Montefiore Hospital, Cohen Children’s Health Center and more will be honored during the event as well.

The 2022 Annual Benefit is sponsored by White & Case LLP, Jack and Colleen Pace, Gary Tannenbaum, Katinka Domotorffy, Huron Consulting Group, TD Bank, Deloitte & Touche, Northwell Health, New York Presbyterian Hospital, and Taconic Capital. Fox 5 New York Reporter, Briella Tomassetti will serve as the program host.

New York, NY, July 19, 2022 – Reach Out and Read of Greater NY, the 501(3)c nonprofit that incorporates books into pediatric care and encourages families to read aloud together, announced today the winner of the Mills Tannenbaum Award for Children’s Literacy — Aram Kim, writer, illustrator, and designer of children’s picture books.

The Mills Tannenbaum Award for Children’s Literacy has been given annually since 2013 to a children’s book author or illustrator who is dedicated to promoting a lifelong love of reading in young children.

The award was created in honor of Gary Tannenbaum and Helen Mills, who are long-time advocates of children’s literacy in New York and dedicated supporters of the Reach Out and Read of Greater New York early literacy program.

Aram Kim is an author and illustrator of many acclaimed picture books. She was born in Ohio, grew up in South Korea, and now lives in New York, happily surrounded by diverse food and culture.

She grew up surrounded by books, and always loved stories. As a child, Aram used to write and illustrate her own stories in notebooks. Since she moved to NYC to attend the School of Visual Arts, and obtained the B.F.A. in Illustration and the M.F.A. in Illustration as Visual Essay program, Aram wrote and illustrated several books. Her debut picture book Cat on the Bus was called a “beautifully designed visual work” by School Library Journal and included in the Children’s Choice Reading List 2017 by ILA/CBC, as well as New York Public Library’s summer reading list 2018. No Kimchi For Me!, about family, food, intergenerational connections, has universal themes, and at the same time celebrates Korean culture. It was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, Bank Street’s Best Children’s Books of the Year 2018, and 2018 A Baker’s Dozen: The Best Children’s Books for Family Literacy by The Pennsylvania Center for the Book. Its sequel Let’s Go to Taekwondo! (Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, Bank Street’s Best Children’s Books of the Year 2021), and the follow-up book Sunday Funday in Koreatown (Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection) are included in the popular Yoomi, Friends and Family series that explores universal themes for children while taking place in a world of Korean American life. Aram’s next book, Tomorrow is New Year’s Day, is scheduled to be published in December 2022. It’s about Seollal, a Korean celebration of the Lunar New Year. Aram made this book inspired by many Korean American families she saw and met who go to children’s schools to share their cultures on Seollal.

Aram strongly believes that every child is a writer and an artist. As an author/illustrator of children’s books, her favorite thing to do is to meet children at schools and libraries to talk about book making and stories. Seeing children’s eyes light up, answering their questions, and listening to their stories children share, are the most satisfying part of being an author/illustrator of children’s books and Aram wishes to continue this journey for many years to come.

Reach Out and Read of Greater New York’s 3rd Annual Conference Brought Mental Health Awareness to Medical Professionals Across New York
The virtual conference, titled Supporting Mental Well-Being in Our Community, brought in speakers from across the US to talk about how medical professionals can support the mental well-being of their patients, families, and themselves.

New York, NY, April 15, 2022 – Reach Out and Read of Greater New York (RORGNY), the 501(3)c nonprofit that incorporates books into pediatric care and encourages families to read aloud together, successfully produced their third annual conference virtually on April 7 and April 8, incorporating 13 speakers to bring their expertise on mental health topics to over 100 attendees. “RORGNY was thrilled with the success of our 2022 Annual Conference,” said Kari Kurjiaka, Senior Manager of Literacy & External Affairs. “A special thanks to our generous sponsors: Jack E. Pace III, Gary Tannenbaum, Wegner CPAs, Parker Waichman, Sergey Kraytman, and Candlewick Press.” The conference recordings are available to view for free for all who were not able to attend the event.

Keynote speaker Michael Yogman, MD from Cambridge Pediatrics and co-author of the AAP Policy statement, Preventing Childhood Toxic Stress: Partnering With Families and Communities to Promote Relational Health, summarized the impact that Reach Out and Read can have on supporting children’s mental well-being; “Moving beyond toxic stress towards the solution of relational health. What is critical and what ROR highlights, is that medicine has been all too preoccupied with diagnosing problems and identifying deficits. […] The resilience metaphor shows that with more positive support than negative experiences you can create resilience. You can see positive support in these responsible relationships. Again, ROR encouraging that kind of communication between parents and children is a critical factor of strengthening positive support.”

During the event, the 2022 RORGNY medical professional award winners were announced. These 5 awards recognize the outstanding healthcare heroes who go above and beyond to serve their community. The Advocate for Diverse Books Award winners were Patricia Anderson, MD, Acklema Mohammad, MD, and Shamiza Ally, MD from Urban Health Plan, Inc. The Jack Pace Living, Breathing ROR GNY Award went to Pamela Piyavunno, RN from Mt. Sinai South Nassau Family Medicine and Barbara Zion-Green

from Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The Mental Health Advocate Award went to Ilana Palgi, PsyD from NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens – Pediatric Practice. The Trusted Messenger Award went to Jennifer Gomez from LINCS Program at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore and Gary Chin from Morris Heights Health Center. The Whole Family Advocate Award went to Claudia Aristy from Bellevue Hospital and Faye Kokotos, MD from Montefiore Medical Center / Pediatric Primary Care at FCC.

Reach Out and Read of Greater New York to Honor Jack Pace, Partner, White & Case LLP

April 20, 2022, New York, NY — Reach Out and Read of Greater New York (ROR GNY) will celebrate serving New York’s youngest readers on October 3, 2022 at Tribeca Rooftop.

While this annual benefit is ROR GNY’s most important fundraiser of the year, the event has been interrupted for the past two years due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization will host this long-awaited annual benefit to secure a substantial portion of the funds needed to continue to bring the gift of reading and early literacy to underserved communities across Greater New York.
The evening will recognize the collaborative effort of the ROR GNY community and honor Board Chair Jack Pace’s outstanding commitment to early literacy. Jack is a member of White & Case’s leading global antitrust practice and has been recognized as a leading antitrust lawyer by several publications, including Chambers, Legal 500, the New York Law Journal, and Law360. Jack also regularly writes and lectures on topics including antitrust, class action litigation, and the economic issues underlying competition law.
After 25 years of service, ROR GNY has reached a critical moment in its development and is committed to ensuring every child receives an appropriate and accessible book at each wellness check-up. In lower income neighborhoods in New York, there can be as few as one book available for every 300 children. The impact of this deficit cannot be overstated – especially when research continues to show the link between parents reading to their children and the significant positive impact it as on children’s academic performance, as well as their social-emotional development, like the landmark study from Dr. Alan Mendelsohn of the NYU School of Medicine demonstrates.
The benefits of Reach Out and Read’s model are significant across the board. Research illustrates that increased exposure to Reach Out and Read leads to larger increases in language scores, and caretakers who are introduced to Reach Out and Read demonstrate a significant increase in compliance with Well-Child Visits

. There is even new research that found that Reach Out and Read enhances clinic morale, increases provider satisfaction, and improves patient-clinician relationships.
“Reading at home with my girls has given me some of my happiest memories and reminded me how my parents’ love of books was a gift they gave me,” says Pace. “Helping to make those memories possible for the next generation of New York children drives us in this work. I love knowing that our efforts help show these families that reading is something they can do with their children that is fun and will have an unforgettable generational impact across lifetimes.”

By raising funds for ROR GNY, you will give young children a foundation for success by incorporating books and early literacy guidance into their pediatric care.

What is peer-to-peer fundraising? Peer-to-peer fundraising is a fundraising strategy that empowers you as an individual to raise funds on behalf of ROR GNY. It gives you the opportunity to share your personal story on why ROR GNY’s mission and early literacy is important to you.

Set a Goal – Your personal fundraising goal should be significant but achievable. When you reach your goal, it will give you a sense of pride and accomplishment. While you are on your way to your goal, the people in your network will be eager to help you reach it.

Personalize Your Page – When you register to be a P2P fundraiser, you have the opportunity to share your story with your network. While your fundraising is all about ROR GNY’s mission, your fundraising page is about you – what drives you, what motivates you, and what inspires you.

Social Media Fundraising – Social media fundraising has exploded over the past few years. Many apps allow for users to start a fundraiser directly through their app – like on Facebook and Instagram. By creating a social media fundraiser, your entire social media network will be notified and invited to donate. If you don’t want to create a fundraiser directly through your social media apps, you can still use those channels to post the link to your fundraising page, share why you are supporting ROR GNY, and invite them to donate directly to your page.

Email Campaigns – Another way to reach your network is through your email connections. With everyone having access to their email on their phones, it is easy to use emails to tell people about why you are fundraising and to ask for their support.

Recruitment – When it comes to fundraising, the more participants we have, the better! Small donations add up quickly. After you register to fundraise for ROR GNY, invite people in your network to do the same. Many hands make light work!

Fundraising Ideas – Get your job involved by asking them to sponsor your fundraising efforts, host a donation-based dress-down day at work, or provide matching gifts. Connect with a local restaurant for a dine-out event where they will donate a portion of the evening’s proceeds. Host an event where attendees donate to participate like a happy hour, BBQ, or sporting event.

The most important tip to be a successful P2P fundraiser is to always thank your donors. There are a lot of causes people can support and they are supporting ROR GNY because you believe in our mission. Make sure to acknowledge their gifts and let them know they are appreciated. That’s what keeps donors coming back!

Need more help brainstorming P2P fundraising tips? Email Trish Rollins, Development Manager at PRollins@reachoutandreadnyc.org or call 646-893-7333.

New York, NY, May 2, 2022 – As a local, community-based school, Columbus Pre-School has created opportunities to engage with their neighborhood in tangible ways. Their hope is that as their community continues to grow, so do their community service efforts, and through their active engagement, they help create service-minded students who move on from Columbus Pre-School as generous community members.

Since September 2012, the Harlem Health Center has been a program site for Reach Out and Read of Greater New York (ROR GNY). Using ROR GNY’s evidence-based model, the medical professionals at the Harlem Health Center incorporate brand new books and early literacy guidance into pediatric care for children up to five years old.

Throughout March of 2022, the families at Columbus Pre-School set a goal to sponsor all of the book needs for the Harlem Health Center, which welcomes over 150 children annually during their wellness check-ups. On top of fundraising for the programmatic needs of this site, the families at Columbus Pre-School collected over 200 new, developmentally appropriate books, and the students created handmade bookmarks to be given out to their peers in the community through the Harlem Health Center.

With the support of the Columbus Pre-School, the Harlem Health Center will have all of their book needs fulfilled to introduce a new book to every child who enters their Center over the course of the next twelve months.
