Running for Little Readers Race Team Takes on the NYC Runs Coney Island 5K

Patricia RollinsJune 28, 2022

Sunday, June 26th, 2022 was a beautiful day to spend at the beach! The ROR GNY Running for Little Readers (RFLR) race team participated in the NYC Runs Coney Island 5K Classic. The RFLR team ran a 5K route along the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk. Even more exciting, the team has raised nearly $12,000 for ROR GNY’s mission! The funds raised from this event will support ROR GNY’s mission.

Reach Out and Read of Greater New York gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. We build on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop essential early literacy skills in young children via the existing health infrastructure. Thanks to these event supporters, more parents will be given resources to be their child’s first teacher as we go into the summer. Funds from this event will also go towards purchasing new, developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive books for young New Yorkers.

The event had great energy, with over 800 runners in total. Three of those runners were members of the ROR GNY Board of Directors. ROR GNY staff was happy to attend and cheer the runners along the route.

We are so grateful to NYC Runs for hosting such a fun event that we could participate in. Thank you, Matt Gregory, for chairing this inaugural event. Thank, you Matt Gregory (again), Jenny Gilmore, Sergey Kraytman, Jack Pace, and Madison Lord, for your donations and fundraising efforts.
